E. 8:11-21 THE DANGEROUS POSITION OF PHARISEES
1. 8:11-13 JESUS REJECTS PHARISEES' REQUEST TO MULTIPLY SIGNS

And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him,

seeking of him a sign from :heaven, trying him.
b. 8:12a And he sighed deeply in his :spirit, andsays, Why does this :generation seek a sign?

c. 8:12b Amen I say, no sign shall be given this :generation.

2. 8:14-21 WARNING AGAINST LEAVEN OF PHARISEES AND HERODIANS
a. 8:14 And they forgot to take loaves; and they had not in the boat with them more than one loaf.

b. 8:15 JESUS WARNS OF THE LEAVEN OF PHARISEES AND HERODIANS

And he charged them, saying, See that youlook out

for the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.
c. 8:16 And they reasoned one with another, because they have no loaves.

d. 8:17 JESUS FRUSTRATED AT THEIR LACK OF PERCEPTION

And Jesus perceiving itsays to them, Why do you reason,
HOti ARtous ouk Eche-te? OUpo noEIte [3531],
because you have no loaves? do you not yet perceive,

neither understand? have you your heart hardened?
e. 8:18-19a LET THE MULTIPLICAION OF LOAVES AND FISHES HELP

Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, do you not hear?

and do you not remember 19awhen I broke the five loaves among the five thousand,

f. 8:19b They say to him, Twelve. LEgou-sin auTO, DOde-ka.
g. 8:20a REMEMBER THE HAMPERS LEFT OVER FROM THE FOUR THOUSAND

When the seven among the four thousand,

how many hamperfuls of broken pieces did you take up?
h. 8:20b And they say to him, Seven. kai LEgou-sin auTO, HepTA.
i. 8:21 And he said to them, Do you not yet understand?

F. 8:22-26 BLIND MAN HEALED
a. 8:22a And they come unto Bethsaida. Kai ERchon-tai Beth-saiDAN.
b. 8:22b And they bring to him a blind man, and beseech him to touch him.

c. 8:23 JESUS BRINGS INITIAL HELP TO BLIND MAN

And he took hold of the blind manby the hand, andbrought him
Exo tes KOmes; kai PTUsas [4429] eis ta OMma-ta [3659] auTOU,
out of the village; and when he had spit on his :eyes,

andlaid :hands upon him, he asked him, If you see anything?
d. 8:24 And he looked up, andsaid, I see :men; for I behold themas trees, walking.

e. 8:25 A SECOND APPLICATION SUCCESSFUL

Then again he laid :hands upon his :eyes; and he looked steadfastly,
kai a-pe-kaTEste [600], kai eNEple-pen te-lauGOS [5081] HApan-ta.
and was restored, and saw all thingsclearly.
f. 8:26 And he sent him away to his home, saying, Enter not even into the village.

G. 8:27-9:1 JESUS: THE ONLY WAY INTO THE KINGDOM
1. 8:27-30 PETER'S CONFESSION
a. 8:27 JESUS QUESTIONS HIS DISCIPLES CONCERNING HIS IDENTITY BY OTHERS

And :Jesus went forth, and his :disciples,

into the villages of Caesarea :Philippi: and on the way he asked

his :disciples, saying to them, Who do :men say that I am?
b. 8:28 THEIR ANSWER
hoi de EIpan auTO, LEgontes [HOti], IoAnen ton bap-tisTEN [910];
And they told him, saying [that] , John the Baptist;
kai ALloi, E-LEIan; ALloi, de, HOti heis ton pro-pheTON.
and others, Elijah; others, however, that he wasone of the prophets.
c.. 8:29a And HE asked them, But who do you say that I am?

d. 8:29b :Peter answered and says to him, You are the Christ.

2. 8:31-33 JESUS AND PETER EXCHANGE REBUKES
a. 8:31 JESUS FORETELLS HIS PASSION

And he began to teach them, that the Son of :man must suffer many things,
kai a-po-do-ki-masTHEnai [593] huPO ton pres-buTEron [4245], kai ton ar-chi-eREon,
and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests,
kai ton gram-maTEon, kai a-pok-tanTHEnai [615], kai meTA treis heMEras a-naSTEnai [450].
and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise.
b. 8:32a And he spoke the saying openly.

c. 8:32b And :Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

d. 8:33 JESUS' HARSH BUT ACCURATE COUNTER REBUKE TO PETER

But he turning about, and seeing his :disciples,
e-peTIme-sen PEtro, kai LEgei, HUpa-ge oPIso mou, Sa-taNA [4567],
rebuked Peter, and says, Get behind me, Satan,
HOti ou phroNEIS [5428] ta tou TheOU, alLA ta ton anTHROpon.
because you mind not the things of :God, but the things of :men.
3. 8:34-9:1 DISCIPLESHIP: THE CONDITION FOR KINGDOM GLORY
a. 8:34 CONDITIONS OF DISCIPLESHIP
Kai pro-ska-leSAme-nos ton OCHlon sun tois ma-theTAIS auTOU,
And he called to him the crowd with his :disciples,
EIpen auTOIS, EI tis THElei oPIso mou elTHEIN,
andsaid to them, If any would come after me,
a-par-neSAStho [533] he-auTON, kai aRAto [142] ton stauRON [4716] auTOU, kai a-ko-louTHEIto moi [190].
let him deny himself, and take up his :cross, and follow me.
b. 8:35 A CONTRAST
hos gar eAN THEle ten he-auTOU psuCHEN SOsai a-poLEsei [622] auTEN; hos d' 'AN
For whoever would save his own :life shall lose it; and whoever
a-poLEsei ten psuCHEN auTOU HEne-ken eMOU kai tou eu-ag-geLIou SOsei [4982] auTEN.
shall lose his :life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it.
c. 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his :life?
ti gar o-pheLEI ANthro-pon kerDEsai ton KOSmon HOlon, kai ze-mi-oTHEnai [2210] ten psuCHEN auTOU?
d. 8:37 For what should a man give in exchange for his :life?

e. 8:38 THE DANGER OF BEING ASHAMED OF JESUS AND HIS WORDS
hos gar eAN e-pai-schunTHE [1870] me kai tous eMOUS LOgous
For whoever shall be ashamed of me and my :words
en te ge-neA TAUte te moi-chaLIdi kai ha-mar-toLO,
in this :adulterous and sinful :generation,
kai ho huiOS tou anTHROpou e-pai-schunTHEse-tai auTON,
the Son of :man also shall be ashamed of him,
HOtan ELthe en te DOxe tou paTROS auTOU meTA ton agGElon [32] ton haGIon.
when he comes in the glory of his :Father with the holy :angels.
f. 9:1 A PREVIEW OF THE GLORY OF THE KINGDOM
kai Ele-gen auTOIS, A-MEN LEgo huMIN,
And he said to them, Amen I say unto you,
HOti eiSIN ti-nes HOde ton he-steKOton, HOIti-nes ou me GEUson-tai [1089] thaNAtou,
Some are here of those standing by, who shall in no wise taste of death,
HEos an Ido-sin ten ba-si-LEIan tou theOU e-le-luTHUIan [1064] en duNAmei.
till they see the kingdom of :God come with power.
NOTE: 8:11-13 - Could there be people today who would give anythingfor a sign- but care little for God's Word - His Bible? Jesus was grieved in His spirit because of this choice.
8:14-21 - Then the inability of His disciples to discern between His warning concerning the leaven of the Pharisees and Herod in their teaching - and the fact that they could not connect Jesus ability to twice feed the thousands with left-overs - and His unconcern that they had but one loaf! If they had Him - then they had all else they would ever need. In the Sermon on the Mount, He stated this principle, and how our Heavenly Father knows and cares for allof our needs. The testimony of saints concerning the truth of this reality is God-glorifying! Missionaries relate the faithfulness of God in allof these areas again and again. It grieves our Triune God when we fall short.
8:22-26 - It is interesting that Jesus had to pray twice to accomplish perfect healing in the case of this blind man. Why would God allow thisto happen? For oursakes! So that we wIll press in for perfect healing when we reach but a partial state! Perseverance is the key! Don't give up easily. Contend for God's best, and it pleases Him to give His best. Remember Daniel. He prayed 21 days for an answer. Nothing happened for 20 days. Then Gabriel broke through on the 21stday, and announced that God heard Daniel the firstday he started praying. But Satan and the Prince of the power of Persia! Then because Daniel continuedin prayer Michael was sent - overcame the archangel of Satan over Iran - and made way for Gabriel to get through. How many unanswered prayers are in heaven undelivered because we do not press through down here like Daniel? See the vision of General William Booth of the Salvation Army in this regard!
8:27-9:1 - Then note that Jesus cannot allow a Peter to set a bad example before fellow disciples. Right following his divine revelation of Jesus as the OT Messiah to come, he then sides with Satan against the will of God for Jesus! How humiliating. And - not the last time Peter would fail! So let us take heart - confess when we fail - and let water flow under the bridge - but wewill pick up the pieces - and continue on! And what should be our attitude when corrected, even sternly? Mark 8:34-9:1 spells it out - the 34thverse is hard - difficult - death-producing for the flesh - but places us in the full camp of Jesus! Then like Peter with James and John we can see the glory of the Glorified Christ!
And let us remember - Jesus - is a Jew. He was born King of the Jews. He was also born King of kings and Lord of lords for His soon-coming over allnations of the earth. One man said, “I could almost be mad at God for letting Jesus be born a Jew!” Indeed! There is a hatred of God and His Son, and His Bible, and His people, both Jew and Gentile Church yet today. Hitler wasn't the first, and won't be the last in this area. But - think of their unsavory end! J.A.W.
